Plant availability guaranteed - high-performance storage and retrieval machines refurbished in six months

With the refurbishment of 14 storage and retrieval machines, Kardex Mlog has transformed the warehouse of the Brandenburger Urstromquelle in Baruth into a state-of-the-art facility. The refurbishment concept ensured that plant availability was maintained even during the conversion work. The project runtime was six months.

Mineral water from the “Brandenburger Urstromquelle” has been bottled in the south of Berlin since 1995. The warehouse, with its approx. 31,000 pallet storage spaces in seven aisles and on eleven levels, was also built in 1995. The high-bay warehouse was constructed by MAN GHH Logistics, the predecessor of Kardex Mlog. After 17 years of operations, extensive refurbishment works were necessary in order to secure spare parts supply over the long term and to maintain high plant availability. When the filling plant in Baruth was opened, it was state of the art. Step by step, the original storage and retrieval machines (SRM) have been refurbished. The proven basic format of the plant has been retained.

The devices are 30 meters tall and each one is equipped with two load pick-up implements for three-deep storage. This means that two pallets can be lifted and transported simultaneously by an SRM. In the case of mineral water, this represents a significant load and during the construction phase, this was the determining factor for the choice of the robust and powerful twin-mast MTwin SRMs. Of the total of 14 SRMs, each pair share an aisle and a crane rail. An impact control system prevents collision of the devices. The telescopic forks are designed with a load-bearing capacity of 1000 kg each. The basic principle of the plant has proven effective and has been retained following the refurbishment which was carried out incrementally and was completed within a period of six months. All mechanical wear parts including the drive systems were replaced. In addition, the controls – still S5 standard due to the year of production – were replaced by S7 controls. The modifications were carried out during ongoing operations. The Kardex Mlog specialists proceeded aisle by aisle. The devices were refurbished in pairs and returned to service so that, during the entire project, six of the seven aisles remained fully operational.
