Commissioning of the building was preceded by a start-up and gradual cooling of the facility. The first frozen foods were dispatched from the warehouse in summer 2017 and the plant is now operating at full capacity. Some 15 million meals are stored in the building at minus 24 degrees Celsius and up to 1,600 customer orders are filled daily.
Cooperation of the deep-freeze specialists
The deep-freeze warehouse project is at the heart of the optimisation of the central logistics processes and it maps the growth of apetito from a material flow perspective. It represents the continuation of many years of successful cooperation between two deep-freeze specialists. The catering and food specialist apetito is one of the leading providers in the community catering sector, and Kardex Mlog has long been a leader in the field of automated deep-freeze warehouses, which place extremely high demands on technology, materials and energy efficiency.
4,000 pallet movements daily
As the general contractor at the Rheine location, Kardex Mlog constructed a four-aisle high-bay warehouse 43 metres high and 75 metres long. The facility is equipped with ultra-modern automation technology, which enables almost 4,000 pallet movements per day. Operations are facilitated by storage and retrieval machines with double-deep load pick-up, two load-handling devices on each machine, fully automatic mixed-pallet loading, and conveyor connections to the rest of the plant. Despite the large dimensions of the new building and the integration of the plant into the existing facilities, the work was completed on schedule within the short timeframe. Just nine months after ground-breaking in March 2016, topping out was completed. The first goods were delivered from the new plant some 16 months later.
